Easy Installation of Codecs, Flash Plugin, Graphics Drivers etc in Ubuntu

EasyUbuntuI run the Open Source operating system Ubuntu GNU/Linux on my computers. I like the Linux system very much. It’s stable, secure and easy to use. One problem though is that the system by default hasn’t got support for proprietary graphics drivers, audio and video codecs, non-free Flash plugin etc. It’s rather easy to every now and then add a package that will provide the necessary support to the system. The problem is that one often forgets to add support and then meets with obstacles at some moment.

There is an easy way to solve the problem though. The solution is a software called EasyUbuntu witch adds almost all necessary extensions to the Ubuntu. Install EasyUbuntu after a fresh Ubuntu installation and usual codecs, graphics drivers, Flash-plugin, Java etc will be installed in an easy way. EasyUbuntu also installs common software as Skype and a couple of compression utilities like 7-Zip as an example.

It’s pretty easy to download and install EasyUbuntu. Just download the latest version of the software by execute this command in a shell:

wget http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/files/easyubuntu_latest.deb

Then add the Medibuntu GPG key to your system with this command:

wget -q http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

The last thing you have to do is to double-click on the downloaded .deb file to start the installation of EasyUbuntu. More details will be find at the homepage of EasyUbuntu.

Ubuntu Documentation says almost all things provided by EasyUbuntu will be easily installed using this line instead of EasyUbuntu:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

YouTube Doubles Video File Size and Improves HD Playback

YouTube yesterday informed the users of the site that YouTube now will allow even larger video files to be uploaded. YouTube has doubled the permitted file size limit to 2GB. It will probably be necessary to allow that large files because of the file size of HD videos. YouTube also improved the HD video playback by introducing HD playback as a default setting for HD videos. The new features will also make it easier to embed HD videos on blogs etc. You only have to tick a check box to use the HD quality of an embedded video.

If you want to link to a video in HD quality, then just add &hd=1 at the end of the URL and the video will start playing in HD. I like the increased file size limit and the HD playback because it will give all viewers an even better viewing experience than before. It will of course affect the bandwith, but I surely think it has been taken into account. YouTube wrote a blog post about the new features. You will find the source of the news at the YouTube blog.

Sherlock HolmesTalking about YouTube. I recently came across a lot of episodes of Sherlock Holmes at YouTube. If you can afford the time watching old television series then I would suggest you to watch some classical Sherlock Holmes episodes for free.

A Collection of 23 Free Image Editors

GNU Image Manipulation ProgramThere are several ways to edit images today. Many web sites provide online services that let the users upload and edit images using only a web browser. A so called Software as a Service (SaaS) will do a great job when it comes to elementary image editing but when it comes to more advanced image editing one will have to use a software instead.

The most popular image editing software available today is Adobe Photoshop. The software is very expensive and most users doesn’t even need all the features included in Photoshop. Therefore ordinary people will come along with a free image editor as well. There are several free image editing software available and many are quite impressive too. Actually I won’t recommend anyone to buy Photoshop or any other commercial image editing software. Only professionals designers need to spend money buying a commercial image editing software.

The GNU Image Manipulation Program is probably the most powerful free image editor. It has got almost all the features that Photoshop has got, but at no cost at all. GIMP handles even advanced image editing but of course doesn’t have all the Adobe support and not as many tutorials as Photoshop either. GIMP will still replace Photoshop for private use without any problem. GIMP is the most advanced free image editor but not the only free image editor available. You will find other free image editors in the list below. I think all image editors in the list will work on Windows, but in general not on Mac OS X or Linux. Try ‘em out!

  1. GIMP
  2. Paint.NET
  3. Picasa
  4. IrfanView
  5. Photoscape

5 Popular BitTorrent Clients for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X

Deluge BitTorrent ClientOnce upon a time I used the famous file sharing software Kazaa to share files with other people. It feels like an eternity since Kazaa was the most popular peer-to-peer (P2P) software, but it isn’t. It was actually only a couple of years since Kazaa was one of the most popular file sharing software. One disadvantage of Kazaa the amount of malware installed together with the Kazaa software. Of course one could avoid the malware by using Kazaa Lite, a ported version of Kazaa.

Nowdays BitTorrent has become the most popular protocol for Internet file sharing. BitTorrent has got several advantages compared to old P2P protocols used by software as Kazaa not to forget the popular program DC++. BitTorrent is an efficient way to share files among a lot of people as fast as possible. The downfall is the limited amount of titles available at BitTorrent sites. This isn’t really a big problem because of the popularity of the BitTorrent protocol. I still think it’s easier to find unusual titles using DC++ or some other old-fashioned file sharing software.

It’s not illegal to use BitTorrent software as long as the files shared aren’t protected by any copyright law of some kind. There are several BitTorrent clients available today at no cost at all. I will provide a list of five popular BitTorrent clients available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. At the end of this post you will find some BitTorrent clients that will work on all three operating systems mentioned.

Popular Windows BitTorrent clients:

  1. BitTorrent
  2. BitComet
  3. uTorrent
  4. Vuze (Azureus)
  5. BitLord

Popular Mac OS X BitTorrent clients:

  1. Transmission
  2. Vuze (Azureus)
  3. BitTorrent
  4. BitRocket
  5. uTorrent (beta)

Popular Linux BitTorrent clients:

  1. Deluge
  2. Transmission
  3. qBitTorrent
  4. KTorrent
  5. rTorrent

Popular cross-platform BitTorrent clients:

  1. Deluge
  2. BitTorrent
  3. FireTorrent (Firefox Add-on)
  4. SharkTorrent
  5. TorrentVolve

Wikipedia has got a comparison chart of BitTorrent clients. If you aren’t satisfied with the clients listed in this blog post then you may find a suitable client at the Wikipedia comparison of BitTorrent clients.

13 Collections Showing Minimalistic Web Design

Minimalistic Web DesignI wrote a blog post about minimalism in web design a couple of days ago. The article was published before Spyre Studios released a list of 56 web sites using minimalistic web design. Spyre Studios also reminded their readers about an old article that listed 20 dark templates using minimalistic layout. Usually minimalism in web design will make the website look clean, simple with a lot of whitespace.

The clean and simple look was exactly what I wanted to achieve when I chose to use a blog theme with minimalistic design. I’m tired of all bloated themes and wanted to have a clean theme that focused on the content of my blog. I’m pretty satisfied with the look of my blog theme after I customized the original theme.

I have come across several collections on the Net containing links to minimalistic web sites. The collections will be a source of inspiration for web designers and other people interested in minimalistic web design. I hope that you will be impressed by the sites and begin to appreciate a clean and simple design where the content is focused and easy to read. Some of the sites may appear in more than one collection but hopefully they are so good looking that the templates are worth seeing twice. I don’t think there is much more to say about this topic. Here is my list containing examples of minimalistic web design:

  1. Minimal Exhibit
  2. 50 Inspiring Examples of Minimalism in Web Design
  3. 40 Examples of Minimalism in Web Design
  4. Web Design: Minimalistic Sites
  5. Minimal websites at siteInspire
  6. minimalsites.com
  7. 40 Stylish, Minimal and Clean Free Wordpress Themes
  8. Showcase Of Clean And minimalist Designs
  9. Minimalism Around the Web: Design Inspiration & WordPress Themes
  10. 25 Cool Portfolios with Minimalism Design
  11. 40+ Minimalist Web Designs

41 Free Cross-Platform PC Games (Linux, Windows, Mac OS X)

Alien Arena PC GameAs a child I was a real gamer, but since I left school I haven’t got the time to play computer games. One of the first computer games that I really fell in love with was the Commodore 64 game Giana Sisters. The game was a rip-off of Nintendo’s famous game Super Mario Bros. I also liked The Gauntlet and Bubble Bobble. I don’t dare to think how many hours I have spent in my life playing those games.

When my brother bought his first PC I began to play PC games like Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and not to forget the classic ice hockey game NHL93 by EA Sports. I think it was Monkey Island that introduced me to point and click adventure games. Well, this blog post is not intended to be a sentimental flashback of the computer games of my childhood.

Instead I’m going to provide some links to rather new computer games that will work on more than one operating system. And the best of all, the games are completely free to download. Yeah, you got that right, just download, install and play these free Open Source games. It won’t cost you more than the time you spend playing them so what are you waiting for? You will find all the games in the list at the end of this blog post.

The first game I want you to try is called Alien Arena. The newest version of the game was released on 19th of June and I haven’t tried it out myself, but the graphics looks very impressive. Maybe the most beautiful Open Source game available? I don’t know, but it sure looks very impressive to me. Alien Arena is a first-person shooter game that can be downloaded at the homepage of the game or at Download.com.

WormuxThe next game in the list isn’t new at all and neither is the game concept. Actually it is a remake of the classical PC game Worms. The game is called Wormux. I recommend playing the game with a friend get the most out of the game. You are also able to play against a computer controlled opponent but I think it’s more enjoyable to play against a human being.

The third game in the list is called Crack Attack ans is actually a remake of the classic Nintendo game Tetris Attacks. It will not work on Mac OS X, only on Windows and Linux. Play this game at a break or when you have got couple of minutes to spare. Don’t blame me if you get caught up playing the game for several hours though. The graphics look rather good and the game is a nice alternative to the not so good looking games available by default in ordinary operating systems.

Alien Arena, Wormux and Crack Attack and a lot of other free cross-platform games will be found in this comprehensive list. Some games may not work on all operating systems but most of them surely will. There are also games in my list that aren’t true Open Source software, but most of them are and all the games are at least completely free to download and play.

The History of Adobe Photoshop

The History of Adobe PhotoshopThe first version of Adobe Photoshop was released 1987 under the name of Display. The code was written by a young man called Thomas Knoll. Later on his brother John joined the project and the following year they spent a lot of time writing code to expand the features of the software. The software finally got it’s name PhotoShop. Not Photoshop but PhotoShop with a capital S in it’s name. Today Photoshop is spelled Photoshop, but at the beginning the name of the software was actually PhotoShop.

John demonstrated PhotoShop for Apple engineers and the software became widespread among their friends. The engineers actually pirated the software to let their friends have their own copies of Photoshop. Apple decided to make a deal with the Knoll brothers and use Photoshop as a part of the application suite of the company. In February 1990 the 1.0 version of Photoshop was released.

This blog post was only an abstract of an article about the history of Photoshop found at PhotoshopNews. Visit PhotoshopNews to read the complete story about the history of Photoshop. Hongkiat has a published a collection of Photoshop GUI images, from the early version of the software called Display until version CS4 of Photoshop.

If you are interested in the history of computers, then point your browser to The Computer History Museum or read the recently published article in Tom’s Hardware about the history of mainframe computing.

Photoshop 3D Text Tutorials

Photoshop 3D text tutorialPhotoshop is probably the best image editing software available today. The Open Source software GIMP is a good competitor, but I think Photoshop is even better. GIMP will surely be good enough for private use, but Photoshop has got some extra feauters that GIMP is missing. Photoshop also has got a lot of tutorials available all around the Net. A tutorial gives even a amateur the opportunity to perform awesome image editing without nearly any knowledge at all.

As I said, there are a lot of tutorials avaiable on the Net. Each tutorial use to serve only one specific purpose, but a tutorial often ends up in a good looking image anyway. Vandelay Design has published a list of no less than 25 tutorials for creating 3D text using Photoshop. The tutorials are great if you are looking for a way to create a logo or even a poster. I have seen all tutorials in similar listings on other sites before, but Vandelay Design has put them all together in a nice list. Take a look at the 3D text tutorials at Vandelay Design.

I didn’t mean to completely diss the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). If you are interested in a great free image editing software then you should absolutely try it out. Download GIMP at the homepage of the software. There are also a lot of tutorials available to GIMP. Gimp-tutorials.net collects many tutorials aimed at GIMP.

DownloadToolz’s Video Downloaders to Use With Hulu, YouTube, Google Video etc

Hulu Video DownloaderTechnology Bites has published a blog post about a software called Hulu Video Downloader. Hulu Video Downloader lets you easily download videos from the Hulu site to your hard drive. All you need is the URL of the video and then choose whatever you wish to download the video in high quality or in low quality. Push a button to start downloading the video and if everything works as expected the video will be downloaded right away. Read more about Hulu Video Downloader at Technology Bites.

When I visit the homepage of the software I also find a lot of other video downloaders from the same developer. Actually there is a large list of video downloading software that lets you download videos from YouTube, Google Video, DailyMotion, Veoh, Break etc. Almost every famous video site has it’s own software at the developer’s homepage. I even found a software for use with a video site called Megaporn. If you use to to download videos from popular video sites then you may be interested in the video downloader list at DownloadToolz.com.

Bywifi Video Downloader is another video downloader that lets you download videos from YouTube, Metacafe, Dailymotion, MySpace etc. Technix Update has published an article about Bywifi Video Downloader. I don’t think that Bywifi Video Downloader will work with Hulu, but otherwise it would be an alternative to the downloaders mentioned before. Read more about Bywifi Video Downloader at Technix Update or at the homepage of the software.
